School Days?
WHO: Vivi and Dr. McCoy, possibly with a visit from Zatarra if she's not busy.
WHERE: The Xavier Institute
WHEN: 15th March, nine thirty.
WARNINGS: Incessant questions from a child-like Black Mage
SUMMARY: Vivi finds himself in need of further education, and goes to the Xavier Institute to further this goal.
FORMAT: Paragraphs

Vivi arrived at the Institute just after nine thirty, having been briefly distracted by the statue out the front. His clothes were dirt free and he looked around somewhat nervously, apparently trying to hide under his hat again.

He knew of a couple of people here and spoken to them once or twice over the communicator, but he'd never actually met them. Not to mention he'd never been inside an actual school before, so he had absolutely no idea what to expect, aside from a large, blue, furry man waiting for him somewhere.

Vivi hoped he wasn't too far away...
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: It truly is!bluepurrymuffin on March 15th, 2011 04:09 pm (UTC)
Hank was in the middle of first period when Vivi arrived. As soon as he received word, he found something to keep his students occupied and quietly excused himself.

He found him wandering the halls, and knew him by the hat.

"Ah, I'm Dr. McCoy. We spoke over the Network."

Vivi's face lit up with recognition when he saw Dr. McCoy. He was pretty distinctive.

'Hi Dr. McCoy,' he said, making an effort to look him in the eye and not keep hiding. 'Where do we start?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: It's really quite simple.bluepurrymuffin on March 15th, 2011 11:36 pm (UTC)
"I was thinking it would be best to take you be Ms. Zatara's magic class," he answered, with an arm indicating the hallway behind him. "Of course, if we sat in the rest of the period, we may be unable to field any questions you may have about the Institute, so we could delay that visit a moment, if you like. Or discuss them on the way?"

'We could talk on the way, I guess...' Vivi replied.

'So... what can you study here? Apart from magic?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: If you'll direct your attention here...bluepurrymuffin on March 16th, 2011 12:50 am (UTC)
"Ah, well right this way, then." He led Vivi down the hallway.

"I can get you a full list of the courses we offer, but it's a variety of languages, arts, maths, and bot social and lab sciences. I myself teach Algebra, Calculus, and Biology."

'It sounds interesting so far. What about stuff like literature, philosophy or engineering? Or gardening or cooking? Do you have people who can teach those?' Vivi asked as he followed Dr. McCoy.
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: I find myself brimming with thoughts.bluepurrymuffin on March 16th, 2011 02:29 am (UTC)
"The first three are certainly doable, literature is in fact standard." He considered the second part, but was a little iffy on it. "I believe we have offered the other two as electives, at some point at least."
if (defined or != "") { print "

Vivi smiled; school sounded good already!

'What sort of books do you read for literature? And how does learning happen here? Am I left with the books or is there a tutor or how does it work?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: Might I just add...bluepurrymuffin on March 16th, 2011 08:09 am (UTC)
"Mostly literature native to this world and those equivalent to it, really. Shakespeare, Fitzgerald, Proust, Homer, and plenty more besides. Mythology, poetry, theater, and novels from around the world! Surely, whatever you might like to read could find its place in the curriculum."

Hank was terribly proud of the library the Institute kept in stock, but he could expect no less when one of the headmasters also owned a bookstore.

'You must have loads of books then!' Vivi replied, sounding very excited at the prospect of all those books. Maybe they could go to the library after they saw Miss Zatarra...

'What do you do if someone falls asleep in the library?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: Most excellent! :3bluepurrymuffin on March 16th, 2011 01:44 pm (UTC)
"Well, wake them, I'd imagine," he said with a laugh.
if (defined or != "") { print "

"; } vivi_sorrow on March 16th, 2011 07:58 pm (UTC)
'You don't let them sleep?' he asked.

'Sorry - it's just that the last library I went to before I came here, they had hammocks you could rent for people who fell asleep among the books. I thought it was a neat idea.'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: Can't be overly concerned at the moment!bluepurrymuffin on March 16th, 2011 11:02 pm (UTC)
"Ah!" he began. "Well, many of our students actually live on-campus, and should one that doesn't fall asleep in the library, there will always be an open room to serve as a more suitable alternative."

He smiled. "The snoring can be known to disturb anyone else in there studying, after all."
if (defined or != "") { print "
" + "
"; } vivi_sorrow on March 17th, 2011 12:10 am (UTC)
'That makes sense...' Vivi said. He wasn't completely convinced, but he was going to let it slide. Things were done differently everywhere; why should the City be an exception?

'So, um, what happens in a classroom?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: How very interesting...bluepurrymuffin on March 17th, 2011 07:08 am (UTC)
"Well, there will usually be a lesson, perhaps some testing, and often study time." He thought a moment before adding: "It may vary depending on the teacher, of course."
if (defined or != "") { print "

So everyone got a tutor to share... that was helpful. The classrooms they passed looked big - at least to him - and full of students in varying states of attentiveness.

'Which room is Miss Zatarra's class?'
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: But there's more to it than that!bluepurrymuffin on March 18th, 2011 01:50 am (UTC)
"It will be this one just ahead!" He pointed to a door at the end of the hall. "We should be able to give you a general impression of how a class is conducted if we sit in for the rest of it."
if (defined or != "") { print "

"; } vivi_sorrow on March 18th, 2011 09:46 pm (UTC)
'Okay! Um... we're not going to disturb it by going in, are we?' he asked.
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: I'm quite sure.bluepurrymuffin on March 18th, 2011 11:32 pm (UTC)
"Oh, it should be fine. It will help you get the idea of what a class looks like."

He opened the door slowly and nodded to Zatanna. "Sorry to interrupt, but I had a prospective student that I'd like to sit in on the rest of the class with."

The class was chatting; it was clear that she was a laid-back sort of teacher. You know, the kind that would give the last fifteen minutes for people to do homework or talk quietly(ish), unless she had a hands-on class that day. For the most part, Zatanna utilized that sort of teaching.

"That's perfectly fine." She's dressed more conservatively than her superheroine costume; a pencil skirt, a pair of kitten heels, and a soft pink blouse, visible as she stands up and pushes in the chair behind her desk. "We're mostly done for the day. It was a catch-up class, mostly book-based. You two are free to look around, if you'd like, however," The room was packed with her own personal sort of items, weird magic elements in funky bottles, books towering in shelves from one end of the room to the next.

Vivi didn't need to be told twice. As soon as Zatarra said he could look around, he was off examining everything on the shelves that caught his attention, which was likely to be most of the contents. He gave a few curt nods to other students when he noticed them, but his attention was focused on the shelves. Even the item shops back on Gaia didn't have half the stuff here...

He found a small, glowing bottle and carefully took it down to study it, cradling it with both hands. Best to assume everything was dangerous if not handled properly. "What's this?" he asked, looking up at Zatarra.
Dr. Henry Phillip McCoy: So it would seem.bluepurrymuffin on March 20th, 2011 04:02 am (UTC)
Hank did his best to stay out of the way for now, but followed Vivi around the room, idly perusing the books himself.
